Summer Exhibition - GETZ: Covers from “The New Yorker” Magazine

Summer Exhibition - GETZ: Covers from “The New Yorker” Magazine

June 2-August 28

Our Summer Exhibition features the iconic work of the late Arthur Getz. Getz is best known for his fifty-year career as a cover artist for The New Yorker magazine. Between 1938 and 1988, two hundred and thirteen Getz covers appeared, making Getz the most prolific New Yorker cover artist of the twentieth century.

The show will feature thirty of Getz’s original cover paintings, covering the span of Getz’s work from the 1950’s through to the 1980’s. The works for this extraordinary exhibition have been generously loaned to The Moviehouse by Getz’s family and are not for sale.

The writer John Updike, in his foreword to The Complete Book of Covers from The New Yorker, 1925 – 1989, wrote: “The artist who has contributed most covers is Arthur Getz, whose alert eye and confident brush find endless silent dramas of contrast and tone in the world around us…”

JEFF DALY, former Head of Design at The Metropolitan Museum of Art will introduce Director, LISA IMMORDINO VREELAND who will conduct a Q&A after the show.

Director: Lisa Immordino Vreeland
Featuring: Cecil Beaton, Hamish Bowles, Leslie Caron

Cecil Beaton was not only a dazzling chronicler of his time, but a supreme arbiter of its tastes. From the Bright Young Things, to the front lines of World War II, and from the international belle monde and the pages of Vogue to a role as the Queen’s official photographer, Beaton embodied the cultural and political schisms of the twentieth century. In this warm, though critical, portrait, director Vreeland (Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel, Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict) blends archival footage and photographs with voice over from Beaton’s famed diaries to capture his legacy as a complex and unique creative force.

TCM Big Screen Classics: The Big Lebowski

TCM Big Screen Classics: The Big Lebowski

A Special 20th Anniversary Event
Wednesday, August 8, 7PM

Cast: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, John Turturro
Writers/Directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen

Jeff Bridges plays Jeff Lebowski who insists on being called “the Dude,” a laid-back, easygoing burnout who happens to have the same name as a millionaire whose wife owes a lot of dangerous people a whole bunch of money — resulting in the Dude having his rug soiled, sending him spiraling into the Los Angeles underworld.

The film is loosely inspired by the work of Raymond Chandler. Joel Coen stated: “We wanted to do a Chandler kind of story – how it moves episodically, and deals with the characters trying to unravel a mystery, as well as having a hopelessly complex plot that’s ultimately unimportant.”

The original score was composed by Carter Burwell, a longtime collaborator of the Coen brothers.

Royal Ballet: Swan Lake

Royal Ballet: Swan Lake

Performance Postponed – check back soon for the rescheduled date.

Live from the Royal Opera House, London
The Royal Ballet presents a new production of Tchaikovsky’s magnificent classical ballet, with additional choreography by Liam Scarlett and designs by John Macfarlane.

Choreography: Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov
Additional choreography: Liam Scarlett and Frederick Ashton
Music: Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky
Conductor: Koen Kessels

Swan Lake was Tchaikovsky’s first score for ballet. Given its status today as arguably the best loved and most admired of all classical ballets, it is perhaps surprising that at its premiere in 1877 Swan Lake was poorly received. It is thanks to the 1895 production by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov that Swan Lake has become part of not only ballet consciousness but also wider popular culture. That success is secured not only by the sublime, symphonic sweep of Tchaikovsky’s score, but also by the striking choreographic contrasts between Petipa’s royal palace scenes and the lyric lakeside scenes created by Ivanov.
